Research interests:

My interests lie mainly in forest birds, their ecology, behaviour, evolution and conservation. My research also involves studies of other forest organisms (fungi, trees, invertebrates, mammals) directly or indirectly relevant to birds’ life.

For over 40 years, along with a team of co-workers, I have been studying birds in the last fragment of lowland temperate primeval forest, preserved within the Białowieża National Park (Eastern Poland). This strictly protected area constitutes a living museum of ecology and evolution, providing a window into the past through which one can still observe organisms in the conditions which prevailed in European forests, before their transformation by humans. This makes the Białowieża Forest an ideal place for studies of evolutionary adaptations, where one can still observe those conditions to which the organisms have evolved, and study the selective pressures which acted upon them in the past. Only in these conditions - free of direct human impact - one can investigate the natural role of predators, food resources or interspecific competition on bird densities, brood productivity and population dynamics. Only here can one still collect data that provide suitable comparisons with data gathered in the primeval forests of other climatic zones, which could serve as a yardstick for measuring the extent of changes in avifauna resulting from man-made transformations. My recent studies in the primeval forest - besides gathering long-term data on changes in the breeding bird assemblages - are concentrated on the biology of hole-nesters, hole formation/decay processes, the impact of nest predation on brood productivity, factors synchronising the timing of breeding, tree phenology, dynamics of folivorous insects and the impact of folivorous insects on bird behaviour and nesting success.
Conservation efforts constitute a very important part of my activities, where I combine research with practical conservation work. I am particularly involved in attempts to preserve the primeval forests (especially the Białowieża Forest) and their birds. More on conservation.
